Responsibilities – Packaging Engineer

Source finished goods and new packaging for client’s Consumer and Commercial businesses within time and budgetary constraints to support the company's strategic objectives of cost savings, growth & profit. Projects include new product launches, new pack types, promotional activity (displays), graphics refreshes, quality issue investigation & resolution with suppliers and customer specific packs.

Represent numerous functional objectives on projects from concept through commercialization in project meetings.

Provide technical expertise to achieve resolution of quality and production issues through knowledge of various manufacturing methods.

Maintain package standards, specifications & best practices through proper documentation with a view towards ongoing tools and process improvements.

Actively provide inputs to project team to establish project feasibility, develop initial timelines and other inputs to achieve project objectives.

Perform root-cause analysis and problem solving to issues with current packaging and good technical design practices on new designs to ensure success the first time.

Work with Engineering, Supply Chain, Regulatory and Suppliers, understand the manufacturing & supply processes, and factor into design for manufacturability.

Cost Modeling: negotiate final costs and commercial terms of various components, working with Purchasing, Planning and Finance to develop comprehensive cost models for new packaging to understand total cost of ownership.

Coordinates packaging performance and qualification testing (ship testing, material compatibility, line trials) coordinating with internal and external groups to validate packaging successfully passes performance criteria.

Requirements – Packaging Engineer

5– 10 years’ experience working with new product development teams and external suppliers to implement new consumer products, or functional packaging from concept through commercialization.

Advanced knowledge with multiple packaging materials, converting processes and liquid or powder filling lines in various manufacturing environments.

Advanced analytical skills with ability to identify cost variables and formulate recommendations based on understanding of material cost drivers. Includes building bill of material (BOM) cost structures at multiple volume tiers.

Proven leadership and project management capabilities; high sense of urgency and accountability.

Creative self-starter with ability to work independently with minimal supervision.  

Strong prioritization and multi-tasking skills to manage competing priorities against aggressive timelines.  

Effective communicator (oral and written communication skills); demonstrated ability to communicate at the appropriate level of detail at all levels of the organization.

Process driven with proven ability to help streamline processes for business growth.

Proven knowledge and experience with formal methods such as FMEA or process mapping, able to effectively apply concepts appropriate to the situation.

Experience with the following systems and software: Intermediate ERP/MRP systems, Intermediate-Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint & Word, Intermediate experience in TOPS or CAPE Pallet Software, Advanced understanding of technical drawings or die lines.

Bachelor’s Degree in technical field – Packaging, Mechanical, Industrial Engineer, Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) a plus

Travel is required at less than 20%
